Founded in 1910, the Canadian Publishers' Council (CPC) represents the interests of publishing companies that publish books and other media for elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, professional and reference markets, the retail and library sectors. Members employ more than 3,000 Canadians and collectively account for nearly three-quarters of all domestic sales of English-language books, and has a significant presence in French-language publishing in Quebec. As importantly, member firms pay over $36 million in royalties to Canada's writers and creators.

Ask booksellers what is hot in specific areas - cooking; gardening; self-help.

Think about book and movie tie-ins

Ask what is new in the person's life who you are buying for - new baby; new house; travel on the horizon

What hobbies does the person have?

If you know a favourite author go and search on the web for other books by that author or similar in story line - help create a library for your friend or relative

Puzzle or trivia books often hit the mark

Children's books with activities
